{"id":6710,"date":"2016-11-16T15:39:40","date_gmt":"2016-11-16T15:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=6710"},"modified":"2016-11-17T16:11:12","modified_gmt":"2016-11-17T16:11:12","slug":"call-for-papers-2017-a-clarke-odyssey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2016\/11\/16\/call-for-papers-2017-a-clarke-odyssey\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for papers: \u20182017 &#8211; A Clarke Odyssey\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/staff\/march-russell.html\">Dr Paul March-Russell<\/a>, Specialist Associate Lecturer in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/index.html\">Comparative Literature<\/a>, is co-organising a conference entitled \u20182017: A Clarke Odyssey\u2019 with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.uk\/arts-and-humanities\/media-art-and-design\/Staff\/Profile.aspx?staff=d52250818a8744d0\">Dr Andrew M Butler<\/a> from Canterbury Christ Church University to be held on Saturday 9 December 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The conference will mark the centenary of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clarkefoundation.org\/about-sir-arthur\/\">Arthur C Clarke<\/a>, who was one of the most important British science-fiction writers of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, and whose credentials included novelist, short-story writer, scriptwriter, science populariser, fan, presenter of documentaries on the paranormal, proposer of the uses of the geosynchronous orbit and philanthropist.<\/p>\n<p>The keynote speakers will be science-fiction author <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stephen-baxter.com\">Stephen Baxter<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.english.cam.ac.uk\/people\/Sarah.Dillon\/\">Dr Sarah Dillon<\/a> (University of Cambridge).<\/p>\n<p>The conference organisers are currently seeking abstracts for 20-minute papers. Topics may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>any of Clarke\u2019s publications<\/li>\n<li>influences on Clarke<\/li>\n<li>Clarke\u2019s influence on others<\/li>\n<li>the Second World War<\/li>\n<li>Sri Lanka\/Ceylon<\/li>\n<li>the Cold War<\/li>\n<li>adaptations to film, television, radio and comic books \u2013 2001: A Space Odyssey, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, Rendezvous with Rama, Trapped in Space, etc.<\/li>\n<li>collaborations<\/li>\n<li>I. and computers<\/li>\n<li>alien encounters and first contact<\/li>\n<li>astronomy, space and space travel<\/li>\n<li>Big Dumb Objects<\/li>\n<li>the destiny of life and mind in the universe<\/li>\n<li>the far future<\/li>\n<li>futurology<\/li>\n<li>politics<\/li>\n<li>religion, the transcendent and the paranormal<\/li>\n<li>science and scientists<\/li>\n<li>world government<\/li>\n<li>Young Adult fiction<\/li>\n<li>the Arthur C. Clarke Award for science fiction, the Sir Arthur Clarke Award for achievements in space and the Arthur C.
