{"id":6634,"date":"2016-10-26T16:59:09","date_gmt":"2016-10-26T15:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=6634"},"modified":"2016-10-27T09:41:27","modified_gmt":"2016-10-27T08:41:27","slug":"antonio-da-silva-on-cinema-aspirins-and-vultures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2016\/10\/26\/antonio-da-silva-on-cinema-aspirins-and-vultures\/","title":{"rendered":"Antonio da Silva on \u2018Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/modern-languages\/staff\/da-silva.html\">Dr Antonio da Silva<\/a>, Language Coordinator in Portuguese in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/modern-languages\/index.html\">Department of Modern Languages<\/a>, is to take part in a post-screening talk as part of the \u2019Journey\u2019s in Brazilian Cinema\u2019 season at the <a href=\"http:\/\/londres.itamaraty.gov.br\/en-us\/Main.xml\">Embassy of Brazil<\/a> in London, on Wednesday 2 November 2016 at 6.30pm.<\/p>\n<p>The talk, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbk.ac.uk\/languages\/our-staff\/associate-lecturers\/natalia-pinazza\">Dr Natalia Pinazza<\/a> (Birkbeck, University of London), follows the screening of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/londres.itamaraty.gov.br\/en-us\/cineclub_brazil.xml\">Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(dir. Marcelo Gomes, 2005). The film is set in 1942 in the middle of north-eastern Brazil, in which two very different men meet along the road: Johan, an aspirin salesman avoiding the German draft, and Ranulpho, a rural Brazilian seeking escape from the drought. Although their personalities and lives are worlds apart, the two men develop a deep friendship, as Johan, in an effort to provide Ranulpho with job skills, teaches him to run the film projector, and drive a truck.
