{"id":6388,"date":"2016-07-29T11:59:12","date_gmt":"2016-07-29T10:59:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=6388"},"modified":"2016-07-29T11:59:12","modified_gmt":"2016-07-29T10:59:12","slug":"reshmi-dutta-flanders-on-forensic-linguistics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2016\/07\/29\/reshmi-dutta-flanders-on-forensic-linguistics\/","title":{"rendered":"Reshmi Dutta-Flanders on forensic linguistics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/staff\/dutta-flanders.html\">Dr Reshmi Dutta-Flanders<\/a>,\u00a0Assistant Lecturer\u00a0in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/index.html\">Department of English Language and Linguistics<\/a>, is to present a conference paper at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsfl.info\/home.html\">Germanic Society for Forensic Linguistics<\/a>&#8216; fourth annual roundtable in forensic linguistics and phonetics.<\/p>\n<p>The GSFL is an international organisation made up of social scientists, practitioners, and students who are devoted to promoting cooperative work within the field of forensic linguistics (FL) and forensic phonetics (FP) to the betterment of the society. The GSFL holds an annual roundtable where\u00a0FL\/FP researchers, educators and practitioners\u00a0can present and discuss their work within an interdisciplinary, supportive and scholarly environment.<\/p>\n<p>Reshmi\u2019s paper on \u2018The Modus Operandi of Analysing Criminal Narrative\u2019 will demonstrate how a plot is structured based on the \u2018principle of relevance\u2019, that is, how an audience interprets any situation for meaning based upon expectations. Using Ford Madox Ford\u2019s novel <em>The Good Soldier<\/em> (1915), she uses a \u2018discourse-based\u2019 frame analysis that is looking for reoccurring themes and how they are placed across the plot form of a story. The consecution of these themes as scenarios contextualise the motives of participants in a story, and can enable a better understanding of an offender\u2019s narrative and further aspects of criminality.<\/p>\n<p>The GSFL Roundtable takes place in Mainz, Germany from the 26-28 August 2016.
