{"id":6181,"date":"2016-06-23T10:38:21","date_gmt":"2016-06-23T09:38:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=6181"},"modified":"2016-06-23T10:38:21","modified_gmt":"2016-06-23T09:38:21","slug":"honorary-degree-for-mary-beard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2016\/06\/23\/honorary-degree-for-mary-beard\/","title":{"rendered":"Honorary degree for Mary Beard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classics.cam.ac.uk\/directory\/mary-beard\">Mary Beard<\/a> OBE, FSA, FBA, Professor of Classics at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/\">University of Cambridge<\/a>, is to receive an honorary degree from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/\">University of Kent<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/index.html\">School of European Culture and Languages<\/a> (SECL) graduation on Thursday 14 July 2016 at Canterbury Cathedral.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Beard graduated from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newn.cam.ac.uk\/\">Newnham College<\/a>, Cambridge and went on to do a PhD with a thesis entitled <em>The State Religion in the Late Roman Republic: A Study Based on the Works of Cicero. <\/em>She lectured in Classics at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/index.aspx\">King\u2019s College London<\/a> from 1979 to 1983 and returned to Cambridge in 1984 as a fellow of Newnham College and the only women lecturer in the Classics Faculty.<\/p>\n<p>She became Classics Editor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-tls.co.uk\/\"><em>The Times Literary Supplement<\/em><\/a> in 1992 and Professor of Classics at Cambridge in 2004. She has presented several historical documentaries for BBC television including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b00wqfcx\"><em>Pompeii: Life and Death in a Roman Town <\/em><\/a>(2010) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b01gknyq\"><em>Meet the Romans with Mary Beard<\/em><\/a>\u00a0 (2012).\u00a0She has published several books including\u00a0<em>Confronting the Classics: Traditions, Adventures and Innovations<\/em> (Profile Books, 2013),\u00a0<em>Laughter in Ancient Rome: On Joking, Tickling, and Cracking Up<\/em> (University of California Press, 2014) and \u00a0<em>SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome<\/em> (Profile Books, 2016)<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, BBC journalist <a href=\"http:\/\/figlover.co.uk\/\">Fi Glover<\/a>, who graduated with a joint honours degree from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/classics\/index.html\">Department of Classical &amp; Archaeological Studies<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/philosophy\/index.html\">Department of Philosophy<\/a>,\u00a0will also receive an honorary doctorate at Rochester Cathedral on Tuesday 19 July.
