{"id":6162,"date":"2016-06-15T12:30:13","date_gmt":"2016-06-15T11:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=6162"},"modified":"2019-04-09T13:37:43","modified_gmt":"2019-04-09T12:37:43","slug":"antonio-da-silva-article-on-child-sexual-exploitation-in-brazil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2016\/06\/15\/antonio-da-silva-article-on-child-sexual-exploitation-in-brazil\/","title":{"rendered":"Antonio da Silva on abuse in Brazil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/modern-languages\/staff\/da-silva.html\">Dr Ant\u00f4nio M\u00e1rcio da Silva<\/a>, Language Coordinator in Portuguese in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/modern-languages\/index.html\">Department of Modern Languages<\/a> has had an article entitled \u2018Little Adults: Child and Teenage Commercial Sexual Exploitation in Contemporary Brazilian Cinema\u2019 published in <a href=\"https:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/issue\/33556\"><em>Hispania <\/em>volume 99.2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hispania <\/em>is the official journal of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese and publishes scholarly articles that are judged to be of interest to specialists in the discipline(s) as well as to a diverse readership of teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.<\/p>\n<p>Antonio\u2019s article explores three contemporary Brazilian films\u2019\u00a0depiction commercial sexual exploitation of young girls and teenagers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eHJ1gcTAjvw\">Anjos do sol <\/a>\u00a0[2006], <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iABTe2O4GGc\">Baixio das bestas<\/a> [2007] and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LVYIo1_50kc\">Deserto Felix<\/a> [2007]). It points out how the young female characters cope with the abuses they suffer and proposes that these filmic representations of the characters\u2019 experiences expose a significant social problem of contemporary Brazilian society: violence against women, teenage girls, and female children, particularly, regarding sex tourism, people trafficking, and domestic sexual abuse. It argues that by engaging with the problem of sexual violence against young females these three films show the consequences this has on their gender and sexual identities. Furthermore, it demonstrates that these are shaped according to their social experience within their patriarchal society, for example, by the latter\u2019s failure to lawfully protect these youngsters against such a crime.
