{"id":5965,"date":"2016-05-12T16:03:37","date_gmt":"2016-05-12T15:03:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=5965"},"modified":"2016-05-12T16:03:45","modified_gmt":"2016-05-12T15:03:45","slug":"call-for-papers-on-heritage-and-biography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2016\/05\/12\/call-for-papers-on-heritage-and-biography\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for papers on &#8216;Heritage and Biography&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A call for abstracts and participants is being launched for an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esrc.ac.uk\/\">Economic and Social Research Council<\/a> (ESRC) interdisciplinary event entitled \u2018Heritage and Biography: Narrating Pasts, Imaging Futures\u2019, to be held at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\">University of Kent<\/a> from 9-10 September 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Under the critical recognition that we become who we are by telling stories about our pasts, and living the stories we tell, this two-day ESRC event aims to bring together interdisciplinary perspectives on the relationship between heritage and biography, drawing on sociology and cultural studies, literary studies, social history, cultural\u00a0geography and socio-legal studies. We invite doctoral and early career researchers to submit abstracts on heritage\u2019s relationship to personal, community, national, ethnic, gendered and political biographies, bringing\u00a0a critical focus\u00a0to heritage as a product and expression of an evolving and dynamic negotiation of\u00a0past, present and future.<\/p>\n<p>Keynote speakers include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/artshums\/depts\/english\/people\/academic\/wright.aspx\">Professor Patrick Wright<\/a> (King&#8217;s College London) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/sspssr\/staff\/academic\/s\/strangleman-tim.html\">Professor Tim Strangleman<\/a> (University of Kent).<\/p>\n<p>Suggested topics for presenters include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heritage and cultural memory<\/li>\n<li>Nostalgia<\/li>\n<li>Industrial heritage and working class (auto)biography<\/li>\n<li>Mnemonic objects and collective memory<\/li>\n<li>Material culture and everyday life<\/li>\n<li>Generations<\/li>\n<li>Austerity and national biography<\/li>\n<li>Oral history and testimony<\/li>\n<li>Heritage and community<\/li>\n<li>Place and social change<\/li>\n<li>Regeneration and gentrification<\/li>\n<li>Heritage and visual culture<\/li>\n<li>Political iconography<\/li>\n<li>Heritage, health and recovery<\/li>\n<li>Memory studies and research methodologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There will be a maximum of 40 delegates and 18 presenters with papers lasting 15-20 minutes, followed by discussion. Abstracts of 250-300 words, together with name, affiliation and email should be sent to <a href=\"mailto:heritageandbiography@kent.ac.uk\">heritageandbiography@kent.ac.uk<\/a>. The deadline for submission is <strong>13 May 2016<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Non-presenting delegates are welcome and are asked to submit a 200-300 word summary of their research.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ESRC-funded students are offered full reimbursement of their travel expenses<\/strong>\u00a0(excluding accommodation). ESRC researchers who wish to attend, either in a presenting or non-presenting capacity, should declare their funding status when applying for a place. ESRC researchers should also provide a brief outline of their proposed travel-related costs (e.g. train fare to Canterbury).
