{"id":5784,"date":"2016-04-04T11:48:19","date_gmt":"2016-04-04T10:48:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=5784"},"modified":"2019-04-09T13:51:53","modified_gmt":"2019-04-09T12:51:53","slug":"comparative-literature-alumna-on-radio-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2016\/04\/04\/comparative-literature-alumna-on-radio-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Comparative Literature alumna on Radio 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kuba Shand-Baptiste, a graduate of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/undergraduate\/comparative-literature.html\">BA (Hons) in Comparative Literature<\/a>, featured on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b074vtk6\">BBC Radio 4\u2019s <em>Women Hour<\/em><\/a> on Wednesday 30 March, talking about make-up choices for women of colour.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Women\u2019s Hour<\/em> programme discussed the lack of choice in reasonably priced make-up for women of colour. Kuba said \u2018women of colour do not get enough support from the make-up industry, new ranges are advertised on television but they are not available in the shops. Cost is also a huge issue, darker skinned women shouldn\u2019t have to pay ridiculous prices for make up for their skin colour. We need more options available at affordable prices.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Kuba\u2019s interview on Radio 4 follows the publication of an article she wrote in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/\"><em>The Independent<\/em><\/a>, arguing \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/the-racist-row-on-macs-instagram-shows-that-were-only-happy-to-celebrate-black-features-on-white-a6887371.html\">The racists response to MAC\u2019s Instagram shows we only celebrate black features when white women have them.<\/a>\u2019 The article discusses the response to an image by the make-up company of Aamito Lagum\u2019s lips, and why black features on black skin seldom reach the level of celebration that black features on white celebrities enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>Since graduating in 2014, Kuba has undertaken an MA in Newspaper Journalism at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.city.ac.uk\/\">City University London<\/a> and works as a freelance journalist. She has published several articles for <em>The Independent<\/em>, written for the <em>BBC news<\/em> website, several local papers and for creative online magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gal-dem.com\/\">gal-dem.com<\/a>. Her more recent articles can be viewed at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clippings.me\/kubared\">www.clippings.me\/kubared<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kuba said of her time at\u00a0university: \u2018Kent has had a huge impact on me as a person as well as a journalist.\u00a0The Comparative Literature curriculum broadened my knowledge and interests in ways I never anticipated, and without the support I received from my tutors, and countless opportunities to pursue my interests through societies and guest lectures, I doubt I&#8217;d be where I am today.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>She also commented, \u2018The wild module <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/modules\/module\/LL530\">Writing in the Media<\/a>\u00a0[from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/index.html\">Department of English Language &amp; Linguistics<\/a>] with Heidi Colthup was particularly helpful. Learning from a freelance writer was a privilege, and her guidance led to me sending my first pitch to a newspaper editor and securing my first internship shortly afterwards.
