{"id":5432,"date":"2016-01-27T11:12:17","date_gmt":"2016-01-27T11:12:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=5432"},"modified":"2016-01-27T11:12:17","modified_gmt":"2016-01-27T11:12:17","slug":"eleni-kapogianni-publishes-on-irony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2016\/01\/27\/eleni-kapogianni-publishes-on-irony\/","title":{"rendered":"Eleni Kapogianni publishes on irony"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/staff\/kapogianni.html\">Dr Eleni Kapogianni<\/a>, from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/index.html\">Department of English Language &amp; Linguistics<\/a>, has just published an article in the January 2016 issue of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.journals.elsevier.com\/journal-of-pragmatics\/\"><em>Journal of Pragmatics<\/em><\/a> entitled \u2018The Ironic Operation: Revisiting the Components of Ironic Meaning\u2019, pp.16-28.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Journal of Pragmatics <\/em>is a peer-reviewed journal, established in 1977, currently published by Elsevier.<\/p>\n<p>Eleni\u2019s article analyses verbal irony as an operation that takes some element related to the literal meaning as its input and results in both a direct output and multiple indirect (implicated) outputs. Her observations, based on a corpus of real-life examples of ironic exchanges, also highlight the differences between the \u2018ironic vehicle\u2019 (i.e. the unit of meaning that is used in an ironic way) and the unit on which irony operates (\u2018ironic input\u2019).
