{"id":5266,"date":"2015-12-04T14:31:19","date_gmt":"2015-12-04T14:31:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=5266"},"modified":"2015-12-04T14:31:19","modified_gmt":"2015-12-04T14:31:19","slug":"harry-potters-parseltongue-to-be-explored","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2015\/12\/04\/harry-potters-parseltongue-to-be-explored\/","title":{"rendered":"Harry Potter&#8217;s &#8216;Parseltongue&#8217; to be explored"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/researchcentres\/cll\/index.html\">Centre for Language and Linguistics<\/a> will be welcoming <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ling.cam.ac.uk\/francis\/\">Professor Francis Nolan<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\">University of Cambridge<\/a> to the University of Kent next week\u00a0for\u00a0a special talk on the development\u00a0first on <a href=\"http:\/\/harrypotter.wikia.com\/wiki\/Parseltongue\">Parseltongue<\/a> &#8211; the fictional language of serpents from the world of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harrypotter.bloomsbury.com\/uk\/\">Harry Potter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The talk is co-hosted with two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentunion.co.uk\">Kent Union<\/a> societies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentunion.co.uk\/organisation\/UKCELLSOC\/\">ELLSoc<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentunion.co.uk\/organisation\/UKCHogwarts\/\">Kent Hogwarts Society<\/a>, with the title \u2018Parseltongue: An Application of Linguistics\u2019. No samples of the language are offered in the books, and so when the producer of the second <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harrypotterhogwartscollection.com\">Harry Potter film<\/a>, <em>The Chamber of Secrets<\/em>, decided to include a scene with Parseltongue he needed the language to be created. Professor Nolan contributed to the design, and will discuss the creation of \u00a0Parseltongue, including what the rationale was for adopting particular phonetic features (such as taking into consideration serpent mouth movements).
