{"id":5038,"date":"2015-10-14T13:09:27","date_gmt":"2015-10-14T12:09:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=5038"},"modified":"2015-10-14T16:35:22","modified_gmt":"2015-10-14T15:35:22","slug":"folk-cd-explores-child-migration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2015\/10\/14\/folk-cd-explores-child-migration\/","title":{"rendered":"Folk CD explores child migration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A CD of music has just been released to coincide with the forthcoming exhibition <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/moc\/exhibitions-and-displays\/eon-their-own\/\"><em>On Their Own: Britain\u2019s Child Migrants<\/em><\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/moc\/\">V&amp;A Museum of Childhood<\/a> in London, curated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/thrs\/staff\/lynch.html\">Professor Gordon Lynch<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/thrs\/index.html\">Department of Religious Studies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The CD is a collection of folk songs entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delphonicmusic.com\/the-ballads-of-child-migration\/\"><em>The Ballads of Child Migration: Songs for Britain\u2019s Child Migrants<\/em><\/a>, and visitors to the museum will be able to listen to tracks at certain points in the exhibition. Gordon conceived the original idea for the CD, working with the folk producer, John Leonard, to identify songs that expressed different aspects of former child migrants\u2019 experiences. The project involved leading folk musicians, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccusker.co.uk\">John McCusker<\/a> , <a href=\"http:\/\/boohewerdine.net\">Boo Hewerdine<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jezlowe.com\">Jez Lowe<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johndoylemusic.com\">John Doyle<\/a>, the trio <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coopeboyesandsimpson.co.uk\">Coope, Bowes and Simpson<\/a>, and contributions from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whileandmatthews.co.uk\">Chris While and Julie Matthews<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ohooleyandtidow.com\">Belinda O\u2019Hooley and Heidi Tidow<\/a>. Gordon provided them with source material, including his own forthcoming book, that formed the basis for most of the tracks on the album.<\/p>\n<p>The CD has been reviewed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.folkradio.co.uk\"><em>Folk Radio UK<\/em><\/a>, the leading Folk and Roots music website and radio station, as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\"><em>The Guardian<\/em><\/a> newspaper.
