{"id":4974,"date":"2015-09-24T16:27:10","date_gmt":"2015-09-24T15:27:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=4974"},"modified":"2015-09-24T17:01:47","modified_gmt":"2015-09-24T16:01:47","slug":"james-fowler-on-eighteenth-century-femininity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2015\/09\/24\/james-fowler-on-eighteenth-century-femininity\/","title":{"rendered":"James Fowler on eighteenth-century femininities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/modern-languages\/staff\/fowler.html\">Dr James Fowler<\/a>, Senior Lecturer in French in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/modern-languages\/index.html\">Department of Modern Languages<\/a> will be speaking at \u2018Eighteenth-Century Femininities\u2019, a one-day workshop to be held at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbk.ac.uk\/front-page\">Birkbeck College<\/a>, University of London.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop marks the launch of an interdisciplinary network eighteenth-century feminities, whose purpose is to stimulate collaboration among colleagues and PhD students from across the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chase.ac.uk\">Consortium of the Humanities and the Arts South-East England<\/a> (CHASE).<\/p>\n<p>The workshop will last all day, from 10.30am until 5pm. Following an introduction given by James in collaboration with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbk.ac.uk\/languages\/our-staff\/ann-lewis\">Dr Ann Lewis<\/a> (Birkbeck), James will present on \u2018Prudes as Objects of Desire in Laclos, Rousseau and Sade\u2019, showing how the figure of the prude was presented by the eighteenth-century French novelists, who have distinct notions of \u2018feminine\u2019 virtue and chastity. He will also refer to eighteenth-century medico-philosophical theories of gender, the body and health.<\/p>\n<p>All are welcome to attend; there is no registration fee. It will be held at Birkbeck, Room 114, 43 Gordon Square, London.
