{"id":4437,"date":"2015-07-03T11:45:00","date_gmt":"2015-07-03T10:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=4437"},"modified":"2018-04-04T12:32:36","modified_gmt":"2018-04-04T11:32:36","slug":"symposium-on-religion-and-the-global-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2015\/07\/03\/symposium-on-religion-and-the-global-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Symposium on \u2018Religion and the Global City\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Anna Strhan, from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/thrs\/index.html\">Department of Religious Studies<\/a>, is co-organising a symposium alongside <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/sspssr\/staff\/academic\/e-i\/garbin-david.html\">Dr David Garbin<\/a>, from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/sspssr\/\">School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research<\/a> (SSPSSR), entitled \u2018Religion and the Global City\u2019, to be held on Friday 11 September 2015, with funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leverhulme.ac.uk\">Leverhulme Trust<\/a>, the Department of Religious Studies, and SSPSSR.<\/p>\n<p>This symposium adopts a non-reductive stance in exploring city dynamics of religious presence in global contexts. How to religious groups make space and \u2018take place\u2019 in the global city? What kind of spatial models, morphologies and \u2018religeopolitics\u2019 do they produce and adopt? To what extent does religion contribute to the \u2018hyper-diversity\u2019 of multicultural cityscapes? What kind of religious centralities and peripheries are produced or reproduced on global cities?<\/p>\n<p>The day will consist of four sessions on \u2018Power, Visibility, and the Politics of Space\u2019, \u2018Centralities, Peripheries, and Religious Reterritorialisation\u2019, \u2018Religious Media, Publics, and Global Cultural Flows\u2019, and \u2018Global Migration, Everyday Multiculturalism, and Religious Place-making\u2019. Phil Hubbard (Kent), Paul-Fran\u00e7ois Tremlett (Open University), Jeremy Carrette (Department of Religious Studies, Kent), and John Eade (University of Roehampton) will be discussants for the event.<\/p>\n<p>The event is free, but spaces are limited.
