{"id":4299,"date":"2015-06-08T15:57:27","date_gmt":"2015-06-08T14:57:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=4299"},"modified":"2015-06-08T16:54:55","modified_gmt":"2015-06-08T15:54:55","slug":"linguistics-student-secures-journalism-internships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2015\/06\/08\/linguistics-student-secures-journalism-internships\/","title":{"rendered":"Linguistics student secures journalism internships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Third-year student Aimee Dutto has secured three internships at women\u2019s magazines following the successful completion of the module\u00a0&#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/modulecatalogue\/modules\/LL530\">Writing in the Media: A Practical Approach<\/a>&#8216;, run by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/index.html\">Department of English Language &amp;\u00a0Linguistics <\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Aimee took &#8216;Writing in the Media&#8217; as a wild module and enjoyed it so much she decided to try journalism as a career. The module involves producing a portfolio of journalism and media-related writing, but also has some brilliant tips, including using LinkedIn,\u00a0which helped her gain some great contacts and network with the right people.<\/p>\n<p>Aimee has just completed her first internship at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.womanmagazine.co.uk\/\"><em>Woman<\/em><\/a> magazine and has secured two more internships with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cosmopolitan-magazine.co.uk\/?gclid=Cj0KEQjw7r-rBRDE_dXtgLz9-e4BEiQATeKG7Hv1q7d8hg1ptsakObDtMS5yNg2i7fwdaR8l05kE6KEaAje_8P8HAQ&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\"><em>Cosmopolitan<\/em><\/a> magazine and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.co.uk\/\"><em>Woman\u2019s Health<\/em> <\/a>magazine. At <em>Woman<\/em> magazine Aimee worked on the fashion pages writing captions for articles on high street matches and celebrity latest styles, as well as liaising with PR assistants and fashion outlets.<\/p>\n<p>Aimee\u00a0said &#8216;The module really helped me decide the path I wanted to take. I knew that I wanted to do something fashion or magazine related but the module helped guide me and teach me what is involved. It is very competitive and takes a lot of patience and hard work to get the internships but I think &#8216;Writing in the Media&#8217; was the first step in my career and a great inspiration.
