{"id":4162,"date":"2015-05-14T12:24:56","date_gmt":"2015-05-14T11:24:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=4162"},"modified":"2015-05-14T12:24:56","modified_gmt":"2015-05-14T11:24:56","slug":"author-emmi-itaranta-to-read-at-kent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2015\/05\/14\/author-emmi-itaranta-to-read-at-kent\/","title":{"rendered":"Author Emmi It\u00e4ranta to read at Kent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Finnish science-fiction author Emmi It\u00e4ranta will be giving a reading of her book <em>Memory of Water <\/em>(Harper Voyager, 2014) for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/researchcentres\/eurolit\/index.html\">Centre of Modern European Literature<\/a> on 21 May.<\/p>\n<p>Born and raised in Finland, but now resident in Kent, Emmi It\u00e4ranta is a graduate of the University of Kent. <em>Memory of Water<\/em> was her debut novel, published in Finland in 2011, and won both the Kalevi J\u00e4ntti Award and the Nuori Aleksis Award. It tells the story of a dystopian world, where water is the most valuable commodity.<\/p>\n<p>The English translation, prepared by the author herself, was published in 2014 and has been short-listed for the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the Philip K. Dick Award and the Kitschies. Adam Roberts, reviewing the book in <em>The Guardian<\/em>, described it as a \u2018poetic and melancholy debut\u2019 and also wrote of its \u2018flawless English\u2019 translation.<\/p>\n<p>The reading will begin at 5pm in Keynes College, Seminar Room 4.
