{"id":3295,"date":"2014-10-29T13:01:38","date_gmt":"2014-10-29T13:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=3295"},"modified":"2015-01-19T15:20:32","modified_gmt":"2015-01-19T15:20:32","slug":"bbc-broadcaster-fi-glover-to-give-alumni-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2014\/10\/29\/bbc-broadcaster-fi-glover-to-give-alumni-talk\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC broadcaster Fi Glover alumni talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BBC broadcaster <a href=\"http:\/\/figlover.co.uk\/\">Fi Glover<\/a> visited the University of Kent on Thursday 13\u00a0November, to talk about her career in radio, publishing and television, as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/index.html\">School of European Culture and Languages<\/a>&#8216;\u00a0celebrations for Kent&#8217;s 50th anniversary. The event\u00a0was followed by a SECL Alumni Networking Event\u00a0with alumni from a diverse range of companies available to\u00a0talk informally to students about their experiences since leaving the\u00a0University and their careers.<\/p>\n<p>Fi Glover is an alumna of both the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/classics\/index.html\">Department of Classical &amp; Archaeological Studies<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/philosophy\/index.html\">Department of Philosophy<\/a>. She \u00a0is one of this country\u2019s best known radio voices, and was recently described in <em>The Guardian<\/em> as \u2018gifted, multi award winning\u2019 and \u2018disproportionately likeable\u2019. She won a Sony Gold Award and a Sony Silver Award for <em>Saturday Live<\/em> on BBC Radio 4, as well as a Sony Silver Award for <em>Broadcasting House<\/em> on Radio 4, a Bronze Award for the GLR Breakfast Show and has received 4 other nominations over the last 10 years. She has worked on Radio 4, Radio Five Live, Radio 2, Radio 1 and GLR, and is now presenting three shows for the network: a landmark three\u00a0year documentary series for BBC Radio called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b01q1lpy\"><em>Generations Apart<\/em><\/a>, a discussion programme called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b045yb21\"><em>Shared Experience<\/em><\/a> and the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b01cqx3b\">Listening Project<\/a>\u00a0&#8211;<\/em>\u00a0a unique and ambitious sound archive being created by the BBC for the British Library.<\/p>\n<p>Following her graduation, Fi cut her teeth on the BBC\u2019s Trainee Reporter scheme in 1993, travelling the country working for local radio stations. She used some of those experiences in her book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eburypublishing.co.uk\/editions\/9781446459669\">Travels With My Radio<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(Ebury Press, 2001). From 1997 to 1999 she also presented <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b03x51n1\"><em>The Travel Show<\/em><\/a> on BBC2, travelling to 36 countries in three years. Over the last 15 years in broadcasting Fi has also presented <em>Rough Justice Live<\/em> on Channel 4, <em>The Technophobes Guide to the Future<\/em> on BBC2, she has appeared on <em>The Apprentice, Call My Bluff, Just a Minute,<\/em>\u00a0<em>Have I Got News For You <\/em>and<em> Sport Relief Celebrity Bake-Off<\/em>. Fi is on the board of Sound Women, the industry organisation promoting women\u2019s rights within the industry and was Chair of Judges for the 2009 Orange Prize for Women\u2019s Literature. She has written columns for <em>The Guardian<\/em> and <em>Woman\u2019s Weekly<\/em> and currently writes for <em>Waitrose Weekend<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you to everyone who attended the alumni event, and to Fi Glover\u00a0for her inspiring talk and for taking the time to answer questions.\u00a0Student Rachel Copley said &#8216;It was a really good event, really interesting.
