{"id":3027,"date":"2014-08-08T14:28:22","date_gmt":"2014-08-08T14:28:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=3027"},"modified":"2015-04-10T14:28:25","modified_gmt":"2015-04-10T13:28:25","slug":"opera-debut-for-nancy-gaffield","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2014\/08\/08\/opera-debut-for-nancy-gaffield\/","title":{"rendered":"Opera debut for Nancy Gaffield"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A book of poems from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/staff\/gaffield.html\">Nancy Gaffield<\/a>, Senior Lecturer in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/index.html\">Department of English Language &amp; Linguistics<\/a>, has just premiered as a new opera.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tokaidoroad.wordpress.com\/\">\u2018Tokaido Road \u2013 a Journey after Hiroshige\u2019<\/a> is a new 50-minute chamber opera composed by British composer Nicola LeFanu which tells the story of a journey through memories. It is set in the rich, hedonistic \u2018Floating World\u2019 of Japan\u2019s Edo period and is a composite of music, poetry, mime, dance and visual imagery.<\/p>\n<p>The opera, which is currently on a summer tour taking in a number of high profile UK venues, including its premiere at the Cheltenham Festival, has received excellent reviews in <em>Classical Music Magazine<\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/tto\/arts\/music\/classical\/article4141954.ece\">The Times<\/a><\/em> newspaper.
