{"id":2754,"date":"2014-06-09T08:41:41","date_gmt":"2014-06-09T08:41:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=2754"},"modified":"2017-08-29T16:18:28","modified_gmt":"2017-08-29T15:18:28","slug":"launch-of-gateways-to-the-first-world-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2014\/06\/09\/launch-of-gateways-to-the-first-world-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Launch of &#8216;Gateways to the First World War&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The First World War <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/german\/news\/?view=2695\">study day held on Friday 30 March<\/a> and organised by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/german\/index.html\">Department of German<\/a> saw the launch of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/ww1\/\"><i>Gateways to the First World War<\/i><\/a>, one of five AHRC-funded centres designed to enhance public engagement and mark the centenary of the conflict. <i>Gateways<\/i> is based at the University of Kent and brings together a team of researchers from the Universities of Portsmouth, Brighton, Greenwich, Leeds and Queen Mary, London. One of the key aims of the <i>Gateways<\/i> project is to encourage academics and the wider public to work together to discover connections between the local and the global during the First World War.<\/p>\n<p>The First World War study day provided fascinating debate and discussion on the First World War and its commemoration and included a panel discussion chaired by the event\u2019s organiser, Dr Deborah Holmes, Head of the Department of German, and featuring Dr Emil Brix, Austria\u2019s Ambassador to the UK, Dr Suzanne Bardgett, the Imperial War Museum\u2019s Director of Research, and Dominiek Dendooven of In Flanders Fields Museum, Belgium. The panel discussed both the problems and benefits of commemorating an event often complicated by \u2018contested memories\u2019.
