{"id":2542,"date":"2014-04-15T09:38:55","date_gmt":"2014-04-15T09:38:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=2542"},"modified":"2016-09-30T15:00:11","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T14:00:11","slug":"professor-karla-pollmann-lectures-in-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2014\/04\/15\/professor-karla-pollmann-lectures-in-the-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Karla Pollmann lectures in the US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Karla Pollmann, Professor of Classics and Head of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/classics\/index.html\">Department of Classical &amp; Archaeological Studies<\/a>, will give lectures at two renowned American universities later this month.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, she has been invited to contribute to the Writing Empire Colloquium, a year-long series of academic events organised by the Medieval Institute at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nd.edu\/\">University of Notre Dame,<\/a> in honour of the late Professor Sabine MacCormack, an eminent scholar of the history of the later Roman Empire. Paying tribute to one of Professor MacCormack\u2019s own areas of expertise, Karla will on 23 April 2014 deliver a lecture entitled &#8216;Augustine as a Global Thinker: Societal Pluralism \u00a0and the History of Salvation in the <i>City of God<\/i>.&#8217;\u00a0 Taking a fresh look at Augustine\u2019s masterpiece that intertwines human history and the history of salvation, Karla will expound that Augustine\u2019s global view of world history was informed by two possible models of pluralism with relevance up to this day: one destructive and one a chance for salutary exchange.<\/p>\n<p>For further details of this lecture visit: <a href=\"http:\/\/medieval.nd.edu\/events\/2014\/04\/23\/25079-writing-empire-colloquium-karla-pollman\/\">http:\/\/medieval.nd.edu\/events\/2014\/04\/23\/25079-writing-empire-colloquium-karla-pollman\/<\/a><!--?xml:namespace prefix = \"o\" ns = \"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office\" \/--><\/p>\n<p>Two days later, on 25 April 2014, Karla will contribute a paper to the multidisciplinary Metaphor Workshop organised by the Department of Classics at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uchicago.edu\/\">University of Chicago<\/a>, entitled &#8216;Metaphor and Complicity. Ancient and Modern Positions.&#8217;\u00a0 Building on a long-standing research interest of hers in the nature of language and its psychological possibilities she will shed light on an underestimated aspect of the usage of metaphor in texts.
