{"id":2315,"date":"2014-03-13T13:45:10","date_gmt":"2014-03-13T13:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=2315"},"modified":"2014-03-13T15:02:46","modified_gmt":"2014-03-13T15:02:46","slug":"laura-bailey-to-present-in-northumbria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2014\/03\/13\/laura-bailey-to-present-in-northumbria\/","title":{"rendered":"Laura Bailey to present in Northumbria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/staff\/bailey.html\">Dr Laura Bailey<\/a> from the Department of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/index.html\">English Language &amp; Linguistics<\/a> has been invited to deliver a talk, entitled \u2018SVO and SOV Word Order Alternation in Latin\u2019 at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northumbria.ac.uk\/sd\/academic\/sass\/about\/humanities\/linguistics\/\">Department of Linguistics and English Language<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northumbria.ac.uk\">Northumbria University, Newcastle<\/a>, on Monday 17 March.<\/p>\n<p>Latin had a &#8216;neutral&#8217; optional Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) word order, that is, an initial subject and the verb following its complement. However, SVO order later became the default in most of the descendants of the Latin language. Laura will present an analysis using the work of Cambridge linguist Theresa Biberauer et al, which accounts for the same SVO\/SOV variation in Germanic varieties, including Middle English.
