{"id":2145,"date":"2014-02-07T12:17:34","date_gmt":"2014-02-07T12:17:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=2145"},"modified":"2014-02-07T14:11:04","modified_gmt":"2014-02-07T14:11:04","slug":"quantitive-methods-for-languages-available","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2014\/02\/07\/quantitive-methods-for-languages-available\/","title":{"rendered":"Quantitive methods for languages workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/researchcentres\/clls\/index.html\"> Centre for Language and Linguistics Studies<\/a> is now taking bookings for the first new workshop series to introduce participants to quantitative methods for analysing language, to be held on Tuesday 18 February.<\/p>\n<p>The first workshop offers an introduction to a statistical software package, titled simply &#8216;R&#8217;, which was developed at Bell Laboratories.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop will be convened by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ling.lancs.ac.uk\/profiles\/daniel-ezra-johnson\">Dr Daniel Ezra Johnson<\/a> (Lancaster University), and will consist of a morning (9:00-12:00) and afternoon session (13:00-16:00). In each session participants will be exposed to a mix of presentation of theoretical concepts in statistics, \u2018hands-on\u2019 exercises in R and exploration of research data sets provided by Graduate Teaching Assistant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/staff\/kasstan.html\">Jonathan Kasstan<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/staff\/kapogianni.html\">Dr Eleni Kapogianni<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>No prior working knowledge of R is required, but some understanding of probability will be necessary.
