{"id":2081,"date":"2014-01-24T11:17:32","date_gmt":"2014-01-24T11:17:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=2081"},"modified":"2017-06-30T18:12:16","modified_gmt":"2017-06-30T17:12:16","slug":"ray-laurence-comments-on-the-future-of-westgate-towers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2014\/01\/24\/ray-laurence-comments-on-the-future-of-westgate-towers\/","title":{"rendered":"Ray Laurence comments on the future of Westgate Towers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Ray Laurence, from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/classics\/index.html\">Department of Classical &amp; Archaeological Studies<\/a> has contributed a piece to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canterburytimes.co.uk\"><i>Canterbury Times<\/i><\/a> about the current condition of the historic Westgate Towers entrance to the city.<\/p>\n<p>With the walls of Canterbury dating back to the Roman era, the Westgate Towers were constructed around 1380 as a gate to the city. Today they are a Grade-1 listed piece of architecture, their iconic status in the city second only to the Cathedral, and they provide an entrance to Canterbury\u2019s main high street.
