{"id":2036,"date":"2014-01-10T10:30:27","date_gmt":"2014-01-10T10:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=2036"},"modified":"2014-01-24T14:20:34","modified_gmt":"2014-01-24T14:20:34","slug":"workshop-on-spiegelmans-maus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2014\/01\/10\/workshop-on-spiegelmans-maus\/","title":{"rendered":"Forthcoming lecture on Spiegelman&#8217;s &#8216;Maus&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 27 January\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/staff\/staehler.html\">Dr Axel Staehler<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/index.html\">Department of Comparative Literature<\/a> will be giving a lecture on Art Spiegelman\u2019s award-winning\u00a0<i>Maus<\/i> (1986-1991) at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tunbridgewellsmuseum.org\/default.aspx?page=0\">Tunbridge Wells Museum &amp; Art Gallery<\/a> for Holocaust Memorial Day 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Spiegelman\u2019s now iconic graphic novel, originally serialised in the comic magazine <i>Raw<\/i> from 1980-1991, was initially received controversially because it introduced the serious subject of Holocaust testimony and second generation survivor trauma to the comic genre. Yet in 1992 it was the first graphic novel to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize and crucially changed popular perception of the comic genre and its literary potential.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hmd.org.uk\">Holocaust Memorial Day<\/a> commemorates the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp on 27 January 1945. The talk accompanies the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tunbridgewellsmuseum.org\/default.aspx?page=0\">Tunbridge Wells\u00a0Museum<\/a>\u2019s retrospective on comic book artist\u00a0Dave McKean.<\/p>\n<p>For further information on the lecture, please see: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tunbridgewellsmuseum.org\/default.aspx?page=2463\">www.tunbridgewellsmuseum.org\/default.aspx?page=2463<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dr Staehler also conducted a workshop this week, on 7 January, at Tonbridge Grammar School. Spiegelman\u2019s text is included in the curriculum of the International Baccalaureate offered at Tonbridge Grammar School, and is also taught in the Comparative Literature module on \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/modulecatalogue\/modules\/CP624\">The Shoah in Literature, Film, and Culture<\/a>\u2019 at Kent.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: Axel will also be giving his lecture on <em>Maus<\/em> at the University of Kent on Wednesday 29 January at 4.15pm.
