{"id":1894,"date":"2013-11-28T18:26:26","date_gmt":"2013-11-28T18:26:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=1894"},"modified":"2013-11-29T11:29:08","modified_gmt":"2013-11-29T11:29:08","slug":"axel-staehler-interviewed-in-french-magazine-transfuge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2013\/11\/28\/axel-staehler-interviewed-in-french-magazine-transfuge\/","title":{"rendered":"Axel Staehler interviewed in French magazine &#8216;Transfuge&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/staff\/staehler.html\">Dr Axel Staehler<\/a>, Reader in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/index.html\">Comparative Literature<\/a>,\u00a0gave an interview on contemporary Jewish literature in the US to C\u00e9cile Gu\u00e9rin of the French culture and art magazine <i>Transfuge<\/i>,<i>\u00a0<\/i>which has come out in the November issue as \u2018La jeune g\u00e9n\u00e9ration d\u2019\u00e9crivains juifs est plus cool\u2019, 72 (Novembre 2013), pp. 84-85.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In the interview, Axel argues the latest generation of American Jewish writers does not face the problems of identity, integration, and assimilation encountered by earlier generations. Indeed, he says, it is cool to be a Jew now:<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u2018Perhaps this is one reason why there is currently no towering literary personality in evidence, such as that daunting triumvirate of an earlier generation: Saul Bellow, Bernard Malamud, and Philip Roth; not to forget the wonderful and sharp-witted Cynthia Ozick. It is fashionable now to <i>schmooze<\/i> and to <i>schlepp<\/i>, to give a <i>spiel <\/i>and to <i>kvetch<\/i>; and sure as anything, everyone knows what <i>schlong <\/i>means, <i>schmuck<\/i>, and <i>putz<\/i>. And if you don\u2019t, you should be worried, <i>schmendrick<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Jewish culture in America has spread and been accepted in its various manifestations, sometimes even into the mainstream. The American Jewish writers of the youngest generation, such as Michael Chabon, Dara Horn, Nathan Englander, Shalom Auslander, Steve Stern, Jonathan Safran Foer, and Nicole Krauss \u2013 to name but a few of my own favourites \u2013 reflect this.
