{"id":14771,"date":"2022-03-17T13:47:46","date_gmt":"2022-03-17T13:47:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=14771"},"modified":"2022-03-17T13:48:02","modified_gmt":"2022-03-17T13:48:02","slug":"hispanic-studies-graduate-publishes-article-based-on-mphil-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2022\/03\/17\/hispanic-studies-graduate-publishes-article-based-on-mphil-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Hispanic Studies graduate publishes article based on MPhil research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Penelope Reilly, an MPhil graduate in Hispanic Studies from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/cultures-languages\/about\/modern-languages\">Department of Modern Languages<\/a>, has published an article based upon her postgraduate research,\u00a0entitled: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/article\/836889\/summary\">The Journeys of the Magi: A Textual Analysis of Two Epiphany <i>Autos<\/i> in Sixteenth Century Mexico<\/a>\u201d in the journal <em>Franciscan Studies<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Her article focuses on aspects of the early interaction between the Franciscan friars and the indigenous people of Mexico in the early 16th century and on the religious plays called <i>autos<\/i>. The article focuses on <em>La Adoraci\u00f3n de los Reyes<\/em> and <em>La Comedia de los Reyes<\/em>, comparing the texts in terms of language, construction, characterisation and presentation. The article examines the history of the story of the Epiphany and why it held such resonances for the Aztecs. It explores the tradition and evolution of European religious theatre out of which the Mexican <i>autos<\/i> sprang and how the Franciscans used drama as an evangelising tool.
