We caught up with Lecturer in Classical History and Literature, Dr Rosie Wyles<\/a>, to find out more about studying at the Department of Classical and Archaeological Studies at Kent. Dr Wyles shares the highlights:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>1. No more exams<\/strong>: most assessment is coursework-based and encourages you to innovate and be creative. Learn how to develop your own classical computer game with Dr Lowe<\/a> in his Classics and Computer Games <\/em>module, or write and record your own documentary with Dr Burden-Strevens<\/a> in The Crisis of the Late Republic<\/em>.<\/p>\n

2. A first year you\u2019ll love<\/strong>: our first-year modules have been designed to give you the skills to make a smooth transition to university-level study and are on topics that you\u2019ll love. Try Classical Mythology <\/em>with Dr Efrosyni Boutsikas<\/a>, the gritty Insults in Classical Literature <\/em>or maybe you\u2019d like to pick up ancient Greek or Latin? We don\u2019t assume any prior knowledge so go for it!<\/p>\n

3. Antiquity beyond Greece and Rome<\/strong>: With us, you won\u2019t just study Classical Athens or Augustan Rome. Take our optional modules in Greco-Roman Egypt<\/em>, Mediterranean Empires from Carthage to the Indus<\/em>, or Roman Britain<\/em> to learn the full range of antiquity, from ancient India under Greek rule to the glory days of the Carthaginian Empire. Or perhaps you want to include a \u2018wild module\u2019 from a different department \u2013 we offer the flexibility for you to do this!<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong> Fieldwork, trips, internships<\/strong>: Travelling to local sites, London and Europe is easy from Kent. Recent guided site-visits with expert historians and archaeologists have included: Rome, Ostia, Hadrian\u2019s villa at Tivoli, and Pompeii. Forthcoming trips include a week in Roman Gaul (southern France) and an archaeological tour of ancient Ephesus in Turkey. Whichever degree programme you select, you can get involved with digs and be part of a team discovering the ancient past first-hand. You\u2019ll also discover internship and work experience opportunities (both within modules and through the Employability Points Scheme).<\/p>\n
