{"id":12455,"date":"2020-04-20T12:22:37","date_gmt":"2020-04-20T11:22:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=12455"},"modified":"2020-10-01T11:12:40","modified_gmt":"2020-10-01T10:12:40","slug":"wissia-fiorucci-languages-lockdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2020\/04\/20\/wissia-fiorucci-languages-lockdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Wissia Fiorucci discusses &#8216;learning languages in lockdown&#8217; on BBC Radio Kent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Wissia Fiorucci, Director of Education and Languages Co-ordinator in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/european-culture-languages\/modern-languages\">Department of Modern Languages<\/a>, has appeared on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sounds\/play\/live:bbc_radio_kent\">BBC Radio Kent<\/a> as part of a discussion on whether, during the lockdown, it is easy to learn a new language online.<\/p>\n<p>In the programme, Wissia discusses what it could be about British people in particular that makes it hard to learn a new language.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is unfortunately a resistance towards learning different languages,&#8221; Wissia says, &#8220;Not from individuals, but obviously this is a country where the native language is spoken throughout the world. Therefore, motivation is somewhat lost.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wissia then goes on to discuss the benefits of broadening your horizon and careers prospects by picking up a language, and also comments on whether learning a language something you should start when you&#8217;re younger or if it can be picked up just as easily at any age.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At Kent, we have different pathways for students who have studied the language before and students want to start from scratch.&#8221; Wissia explains, &#8220;students who start as beginners often tend to actually become better because they have the passion and commitment that you can&#8217;t really have when you&#8217;re a child.
