We hope you enjoy their recommendations!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/staff\/schaffner.html\"><strong>Anna Katharina Schaffner<\/strong><\/a>, Reader in Comparative Literature says:<\/p>\n<p>This year, I really enjoyed reading Sally Rooney&#8217;s brilliant, perceptive and productively disturbing coming of age tale <em><strong>Normal People<\/strong><\/em> (2018), as well as Deborah Levy&#8217;s quirky and beautifully surreal <em><strong>Hot Milk<\/strong><\/em> (2016). I also loved Lauren Groff&#8217;s magnificent new short story collection <em><strong>Florida<\/strong><\/em> (2018) &#8211; evocative and often eerie, it is teeming with insight and compelling lyricisms.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/staff\/novillo-corvalan.html\"><strong>Patricia Novillo-Corval\u00e1n<\/strong><\/a>, Senior Lecturer in Comparative Literature, goes back to an old favourite:<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m planning to reread Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez\u2019s epic novel <em><strong>One Hundred Years of Solitude<\/strong><\/em> (1967) this summer. I loved this novel when I first read it at the age of 18 and I now feel that I&#8217;m ready to read it again! I look forward to immersing myself in its 100 years of magic and despair, joy and solitude, truth and superstition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/staff\/pettitt.html\"><strong>Jo Pettitt<\/strong><\/a>, Lecturer in Comparative Literature, takes a trip into childhood with her recommendation:<\/p>\n<p>In the summer, I love to go back to my childhood favourites! This year, I plan on journeying back to Fantasia with the young Bastian Bux in Michael Ende&#8217;s <em><strong>The Neverending Story<\/strong><\/em>. I hope you all love it as much as I do!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/staff\/haustein.html\"><strong>Katja Haustein<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Lecturer in Comparative Literature, takes a trip even further back:<\/p>\n<p>One of the texts I rediscovered this term is a novella by the Romantic writer Heinrich von Kleist: <em><strong>The Marquise von O\u2026<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0The story opens with a rather unusual advertisement in a local newspaper: A lady announces that she has become pregnant without her realising, and that the father to her unborn child should make himself known so that they could marry. It&#8217;s a weird story, very beautiful but also deeply disturbing and, although written more than 200 years ago, of an uncanny timeliness in the age of \u2018#MeToo&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from these recommendations, below you will find a list with additional introductory texts.<\/p>\n<h4>Useful introductions<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Susan Bassnett: <strong><em>Comparative Literature: A Critical Introduction<\/em><\/strong> (1993)<\/li>\n<li>Ben Hutchinson: <strong><em>Comparative Literature: A Very Short Introduction<\/em><\/strong> (2018). Fun, accessible and Comp Lit in a nutshell!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Primary texts (in alphabetical order)<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Anon:<strong> <em>The Arabian Nights<\/em><\/strong> (selected tales from master storyteller Scheherazade, including the frame narrative, will be studied in our stage 1 module <em>The Tale<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Charlotte Bront\u00eb:<strong> <em>Wuthering Heights<\/em><\/strong> (you will study this classic gothic text in our stage 2 module, <em>Rethinking Gender: From the Bront\u00eb Sisters to Eimear McBride<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Geoffrey Chaucer:<strong> <em>The Canterbury Tales<\/em><\/strong> (essential reading to experience Canterbury\u2019s rich literary heritage. Selected tales, including \u2018The Miller\u2019s Tale\u2019 and the \u2018Clerk\u2019s Tale\u2019, feature in <em>The Tale<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Angela Carter:<strong> <em>The Bloody Chamber<\/em><\/strong> (this is another text you will study in <em>The Tale<\/em>. Carter simultaneously sums up and tears apart the fairy tale tradition)<\/li>\n<li>Gustave Flaubert:<strong> <em>Madame Bovary<\/em><\/strong> (an influential novel of the nineteenth-century tradition of female adultery. It features in our stage 3 module <em>The Book and the Film<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Fyodor Dostoevsky: \u201cThe Grand Inquisitor\u201d, a chapter from <strong><em>The Brothers Karamazov<\/em><\/strong><em> &#8211; <\/em>students are welcome to read on if they would like to &#8211; and\/or <strong><em>Notes from the Underground<\/em><\/strong> (One of the most distinguished voices in Russian literature)<\/li>\n<li>Julio Cort\u00e1zar:<strong> <em>Blow-Up and Other Stories<\/em> <\/strong>(the weirdest, most wondrous tales you will ever read! You will study a selection of short stories: \u2018Axolotl\u2019, \u2018The House Taken Over\u2019, \u2018Letter to a Young Lady in Paris\u2019 in \u2018The Tale\u2019 and our stage 2 module <em>Latin American Fiction<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Homer:<strong> <em>The Odyssey, <\/em><\/strong>a foundational epic that features in our stage 1 module, <em>The Tale<\/em>, especially Books 9-11: Odysseus\u2019 voyages through wonderland<\/li>\n<li>Elfriede Jelinek: <strong><em>The Piano Teacher,\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong>a dazzling novel by Austrian Nobel laureate features in <em>Rethinking Gender: From the Bront\u00eb Sisters to Eimear McBride<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Franz Kafka:<strong> <em>The Metamorphosis<\/em><\/strong> (essential reading, a unique literary imagination.
