{"id":11692,"date":"2019-12-10T11:00:20","date_gmt":"2019-12-10T11:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=11692"},"modified":"2019-12-10T11:00:20","modified_gmt":"2019-12-10T11:00:20","slug":"teddy-groves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2019\/12\/10\/teddy-groves\/","title":{"rendered":"Philosophy alumnus Teddy Groves published in The Guardian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alumnus Teddy Groves (PhD Philosophy, 2016) has written <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2019\/dec\/05\/pollsters-results-secrecy-statisticians-surveys\">an article<\/a> for\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em> on the upcoming general election, entitled &#8216;If pollsters want us to trust their results they need to lose the secrecy&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Election campaigns are always full of statistical discord, but this one has been particularly acrimonious,&#8221; Teddy writes; &#8220;Questions are understandably being asked about the contributions of the media, political parties and electoral regulators to the poor level of public discussion of public opinion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Michael Wilde, Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy, says: \u201cTeddy completed a PhD in Philosophy in 2016 under the supervision of Jon Williamson, David Corfield, and Juergen Landes. He defended the use of inductive logics as a way of scrutinising the assumptions behind the sort of uncertain reasoning that is prevalent in scientific inquiry.
