{"id":10248,"date":"2019-04-01T14:56:37","date_gmt":"2019-04-01T13:56:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=10248"},"modified":"2019-04-29T14:55:39","modified_gmt":"2019-04-29T13:55:39","slug":"arvaniti-erc-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2019\/04\/01\/arvaniti-erc-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"Amalia Arvaniti receives \u20ac2.5m European Research Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Professor Amalia Arvaniti has been awarded a grant of almost \u20ac2.5m to investigate the role of tone of voice in communication and ways it might influence conversations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/staff\/arvaniti.html\">Amalia Arvaniti<\/a>, Professor of Linguistics in the Department of English Language and Linguistics, specialises in the study of\u00a0intonation, the ways in which people use pitch (often referred to as tone of voice) to indirectly communicate meaning.<\/p>\n<p>In total she has been awarded \u20ac2.48m (\u00a32.126m) from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/erc.europa.eu\/\">European Research Council<\/a>\u00a0(ERC) for SPRINT, a five year research project entitled\u00a0\u2018Speech Prosody in Interaction: The form and function of intonation in human communication\u2019.
