The Department of Classical and Archaeological studies has launched a Short Story competition for students in years 7-12 in UK schools and colleges. This competition has been shaped by the exciting research being undertaken in the Roman and Late Antique Artefacts from Egypt project, bringing artefacts from the past back to life – and the Department is inviting budding students of archaeology to do the same through the power of storytelling.

Entrants are invited to write a short story inspired by one of the artefacts featured on the project’s blog, and prizes up for grabs include a first prize of £100, a second prize of £50, and two runners-up prizes of £25.

Those interested in entering the project may wish to be inspired by the ‘Sounds of Roman Egypt’ exhibition at the Petrie Museum, which has one of the largest and best-documented collections of Roman artefacts in the UK, including musical instruments that are too fragile to be played today.Short Story competition 2019
