Each year we are asked by applicants and prospective students for suggestions of reading material that might provide an introduction to the topics that students will study as part of their respective degree programmes.
A large number of our new students join the School having studied their degree subject at A level but, for many, their degree programme marks the start of a journey into a new academic discipline. Having the opportunity to familiarise themselves with topics they may encounter, and develop the habit of reading widely, helps ensure that new students feel prepared for their degree and settle in quickly when they arrive.
We asked staff and students in each of the School of European Culture and Languages’ six departments to contribute their suggestions for books, films, TV shows and podcasts that prospective students might like to find in their stocking on Christmas morning!
Select a department below for their festive recommendations:
- Classical & Archaeological StudiesĀ
- Comparative Literature
- English Language & Linguistics
- Modern Languages
- Philosophy
- Religious Studies
Best wishes for the festive season from all in the School of European Culture and Languages.
