Professor Gordon Lynch, Michael Ramsey Professor of Modern Theology in the Department of Religious Studies, has provided media commentary on US president Donald Trump’s controversial policy of separating children from their parents on the US-Mexico border.
Gordon’s comments draw on his own research expertise on child migration
He was interviewed on BBC Radio Kent yesterday, on Drive with Steve N Allen and Lauren Troup on 20 June. ‘Donald Trump is very much on the wrong end of international opinion on this, and I think there are many people in this country that feel Theresa May could go much further than she’s already done on this,’ stated Gordon.
The broadcast is available online, and Gordon’s interview can be heard at 01:13:30 mark here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0692j13
He also provided an expert comment for The Conversation website, titled ‘Children have been separated from their families for generations – why Trump’s policy was different’.
‘Compared to historical welfare interventions, this US policy also lacked any moral claim that the separations were for the good of the child,’ explains Gordon in the article. ‘It functioned simply as a punitive measure against immigration, ignoring evidence of the traumatic effects of separation from parents for children.’
