Dr Graeme Forbes, Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy, has contributed an article to The Conversation, explaining why a 10,000 year clock is being built under a mountain.
Graeme’s article not only gives the background as to why the clock will have a year hand, a century hand, and a cuckoo that comes out every 1,000 years, but also argues why 10,000 years is too long.
‘This is my worry with “long-term thinking”,’ explains Graeme in the article, ‘such thinking risks removing us from the contexts (our life plan, our society, our civilisation) in which things matter to us.’
The piece has already generated wider interest, being republished on Yahoo News.
