Lauren Ware comments on Universal Basic Income

Dr Lauren Ware, Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy, has made a recent contribution to City A.M., London’s free daily business newspaper, following the Royal Society of Arts recent proposal to give all citizens under 55 a grant of £10,000 as a form of Universal Basic Income, especially in the light of rising automation.

Lauren argues: ‘We suffer from a culture of competitive overwork that is unpleasant, unhealthy, and unsustainable. Faced with rising automation, the state should consider a variety of options: one of them is a universal basic income…

‘If people know their income is secure, they’re able to be more creative, to plan for the long term, and to allow time for caring for themselves and their loved ones.’
