Sumio Kobayashi wins first prize at BMIMF

Busan Maru International Music Festival (BMIMF)

Following his success at the Weimar Spring Festival of Contemporary Music in April, Sumio Kobayashi, PhD student in Linguistics, has won first prize in composition as part of the Busan Maru International Music Festival (BMIMF) competition.

Busan is the second largest city in South Korea, with a 3.6 million inhabitants. The BMIMF is an annual music festival that began in 2010 to promote international music. The festival is held in September each year. Sumio, who is from Japan, will see his composition performed at the 2017 BMIMF festival.

Music composition is related to Sumio’s own PhD research in linguistics, supervised by Professor Amalia Arvaniti, with a project on  ‘Prosody of Language and Music’, examining the relationship between speech rhythm and music.
