Professor Karla Pollmann, Head of the Department of Classical & Archaeological Studies and Director of the Centre for Early Christianity and Its Reception (CECIR), is to give lectures in Belgium and the Netherlands based on her research into early Christianity.
On 27 March 2015, she will present the results of her interdisciplinary research on the reception of early Christianity at the University of Leuven, Belgium. This lecture is part of the doctoral colloquium ‘Quo vadis, Patrologia?‘ hosted by the Belgian Association for the Study of Religion.
On 2 April 2015, Karla will deliver a keynote lecture for Forum Antiquum, a lecture series organised by the Department of Greek and Latin, at the University of Leiden, the Netherlands. The lecture, in homage to the Dutch scholarship that has inspired Karla’s work, will deal with aspects of the thought and impact of Augustine of Hippo (354-430) and will be delivered in Dutch.
Both these lectures mark, and contribute to, an increasing trend to look at the tradition of early Christianity as a cultural force shaped by the surrounding Mediterranean tradition which, in turn, helped to shape the Western tradition to the present day. As such, these lectures are an integral part of the scholarly approach and interests promoted by the CECIR.
