Edward Kanterian publishes in Neue Zürcher Zeitung

Neue Zürcher Zeitung, 14 September 2014

Dr Edward Kanterian from the Department of Philosophy has just had an article on communism published in the 14 September edition of Neue Zürcher Zeitung [Zurich New Journal], a major Swiss newspaper with a circulation of 170,000.

The article, entitled ‘Den Willen und die Knochen brechen’ [‘Breaking the Will and the Bones’], analyses the history of the legal prosecution of crimes committed by the Communist regime in Romania 1947-1989, and the political and social aspect of this prosecution. It comes to the conclusion that the prosecution of these crimes, after 1989 (when Communism came to a fall in Romania), was obstructed by former members of the Communist regime. Only when an anti-Communist president, Traian Basescu, was voted into power did things change for the better, although difficulties of legal and political nature remain. Still, where there is a political will, there is a way to bring to justice some of the worst political criminals since 1945.

The article is related to Dr Kanterian’s social impact and research project entitled ‘Liberalism and its Enemies’.
