Dr Edward Kanterian, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy, has just published a review article in the German magazine Die Zeit [The Time]. Die Zeit is a German national newspaper with a weekly circulation of around half a million copies.
Reviewing the new book by Anne Applebaum, Der Eiserne Vorhang: Die Unterdrückung Osteuropas 1944–1956 [The Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe 1944-1956] (Siedler, 2013), the article discusses the concept of totalitarianism, by means of which Fascism and Communism become comparable political doctrines and systems. It also discusses the unbridgeable dichotomy between ideology and reality characterising such systems, and argues, by means of examples, that Socialist economies were doomed to fail.
