Lecturer in Italian, Dr Alex Marlow-Mann, delivered the keynote address at the fourth annual Postgraduate Symposium of B-Film, hosted by The Birmingham Centre for Film Studies at the University of Birmingham on the 5th March 2021.
The conference team explain, “Whether by exploring regional variations within individual nations or the role played by the local in global cinema, this symposium strives to put diverse manifestations of cinematic modes, genres, and styles in dialogue with one another. This event is aimed at bringing PGRs from different academic institutions together to discuss their research in a welcoming and supportive environment. The initiative also intends to stimulate reflection on glocal and regional cinema in order to facilitate exchanges of ideas and encourage different approaches to the topics covered. ”
The event, dedicated to ‘Glocal/Regional Cinema’, was inspired by his research on the subject. His keynote address ‘Glocalising Film Scholarship in Contemporary Academia’ drew on research carried out both for his first monograph, on the ‘New Neapolitan Cinema’, and his forthcoming monograph, on ‘The Political Cinema in Its Global Context’, to reflect on how issues around geographic categorisation impact on academic research in film studies.
On participating at the event, Dr Alex Marlow-Mann says, “This was a really exciting symposium that demonstrated the range and quality of work being carried out by postgraduate researchers as well as the vibrant research community that exists around B-Film. It was a pleasure and honour to be invited to deliver the keynote address and share my research.”
