The academic successes of students in the School of European Culture and Languages at Kent were celebrated with a reception and prize-giving ceremony on campus and a degree congregation in Canterbury Cathedral on 18 July.
Families, friends and staff from each of the School’s six academic departments took their seats in the Cathedral’s beautiful vaulted nave to see undergraduate and postgraduate degrees being conferred by Vice-Chancellor Professor Karen Cox.
During the ceremony, the University awarded Joanna Roper CMG, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Special Envoy for Gender Equality, and former Chair of FCO Women, an honorary Doctor of the University degree. Joanna is an alumna of the University of Kent and graduated in 1991 with a BA in Social Anthropology with Linguistics.
Celebrations prior to the evening ceremony included a reception on the Canterbury campus, hosted by the Deputy Head of School, Dr Antonio Lázaro-Reboll, who welcomed graduands and their families and presented prizes to students in recognition of their successes.
He said: ‘It was an honour to mark the success of our 2019 graduates and the School wishes them all the very best of luck in their future endeavours, whether in further study or employment. I hope that all those graduating today will remain members of the School community via the University’s extensive alumni network and we look forward to staying in touch with them in the years to come.’
