Kent’s Modern Languages students take part in school mentoring scheme during pandemic

Lecturer in Latin American Studies, Dr Rebecca Ogden, and Dr Tobias Heinrich, Lecturer in German, have been interviewed for a KMTV documentary on the University’s response to the Coronavirus crisis.

Since the start of the pandemic, over thirty of our Modern Languages students have volunteered to mentor over two-hundred pupils in more than fifteen schools across Kent and beyond studying towards their GCSEs and A-levels in French, German, Italian or Spanish.

The mentors meet with pupils online on a regular basis to provide them with an opportunity to speak their target language and share their enthusiasm for foreign cultures at a time where regular teaching in schools as well as international travel is strongly restricted. For the volunteering students, the mentoring scheme provides a unique chance to improve their teaching and leadership skills during the pandemic.
