Dr Steve Willis, Head of the Department of Classical and Archaeological Studies, will appear on ‘Walking Britain’s Roman Roads’ with Dan Jones on Friday 7 August at 20.00 on 5Select.
The episode can already be viewed on the MY5 website. The episode focuses on Stane Street and reflects on the contribution of roads to the Roman state and economy.
Steve says: “In the past, trackways and roads were the equivalent of the internet, yet we often take them for granted. For the Romans they were vital for moving troops, conveying imperial policy and delivering the materials that built and fed the empire. Direct and enduring, Roman roads in Britain, as elsewhere, ensured fast travel. At this time Canterbury was the equivalent of the motorway interchange for those arriving or departing from Rome’s most northerly province.”
