Dr William Rowlandson, Senior Lecturer in Hispanic Studies in the Department of Modern Languages, has been interviewed by CNN, following the death of Fidel Castro, about what’s next for Cuba under Raul Castro?
The interview with CNN follows two articles written by William for The Conversation website, including an article on Cuban-American diplomatic relations following the election of Donald Trump and on Jean-Paul Sartre’s observations of Fidel Castro.
In the latest article, CNN asks if following the death of his brother Fidel, will Cuban President Raul Castro take the chance to move their country in a new direction? The article discusses the key areas to watch in the future of Cuba including economic reforms, Castro’s successor when he steps down in 2018, relations with the United States and human rights.
When asked about Raul Castro’s likely successor Diaz Canel, William points out that he is significantly younger than the Castro brothers. ‘That makes him very different. It means that the changing leadership is actually a generational change rather than just a change of figure.’
