Dr Heide Kunzelmann, lecturer in German in the Department of Modern Languages, is to give a talk at the University of Klagenfurt in Austria on Thursday 12 May entitled ‘Speaking Truth to Power Rot-Weiss-Rot’ Überlegungen zum Typus des österreichischen öffentlichen Intellektuellen’ [‘Speaking Truth to Power in Red,White and Red: Towards a Model of an Austrian Public Intellectual].
The lecture is based on Heide’s current research project on the history of Austrian public intellectual. It gives a comparative overview of recent research on public intellectuals and develops an approach to discuss the phenomenon in a specifically Austrian context. The lecture also provides an insight into the socio-political and historical conditions of intellectual work in the public sphere of 19th and 20th century Austria and highlights examples of public intellectual activity in the field of literature, journalism, religious critique and economic policy, to illustrate the topic’s potential for a revision of Austrian intellectual history.
