Second- and third-year Comparative Literature students are organising a series of events in honour of Holocaust Memorial Day after taking the module The Shoah in Literature, Film and Culture, convened by Dr Axel Stähler.
The Holocaust memorial events start today, Wednesday 21 January, with a talk by Joan Salter, a Holocaust survivor, from 5-7pm in Woolf Lecture Theatre 1. This is followed by readings, talks and speeches on Tuesday 27 January from 6-7pm in Grimond Lecture Theatre 3.
Through the week there will also be film festival in Grimond Lecture Theatre 3 from 7pm, featuring movies related to the Shoah. The films include Schindler’s List on Monday 26 January, Defiance on Wednesday 28 January, The Pianist on Thursday 29 January and Band of Brothers: ‘Why We Fight’ on Friday 30 January.
All three events have been organised in association with the Kent Jewish Society, the Holocaust Educational Trust and the Kent Student Union .
The students will also launch an online journal on Tuesday 27 January entitled Undergraduate Shoah Studies at Kent with reviews, interviews, historical essays and creative writing on the theme Shoah and the various modes of its representation and commemoration. The journal is available at shoahstudies-kent.org
