Shane Weller, Head of the School of European Culture and Languages (SECL) and Professor of Comparative Literature, has just co-authored a book with Dirk Van Hulle from the University of Antwerp in Belgium, entitled The Making of Samuel Beckett’s ‘L’Innommable’/’The Unnamable’ (University Press Antwerp / Bloomsbury, 2014).
Originally published in French as L’Innommable in 1953 and translated into English by the author, The Unnamable is the third and final novel in Samuel Beckett’s major post-war trilogy, which began with Molloy and Malone meurt [Malone Dies] (1951).
The Making of Samuel Beckett’s ‘L’Innommable’/‘The Unnamable’ offers a critical analysis of the history of one of the most important novels of the post-war era. The book includes: a complete descriptive catalogue of available relevant manuscripts, including French and English texts, alternative drafts and notebook pages; a critical reconstruction of the history of the text; and a detailed guide to the relevant manuscripts at the Beckett Digital Manuscript Project, a collaborative project supported by the Estate of Samuel Beckett, found online at www.beckettarchive.org
