Ines Ruiz, a PhD student supervised by Dr Natalia Sobrevilla Perea and Dr Antonio Lázaro-Reboll in the Department of Hispanic Studies, has just appeared in a news article in The Guardian dated Friday 14 March 2014.

The article, written by Dan Collyns, discusses the fight for justice by women who underwent sterilisation in the 1990s under the Peruvian government.

Ines Ruiz directed a film about this emotive subject. ‘Physicians had to perform a number of surgical interventions in order to reach an annual goal imposed by the Peruvian government,’ Ines is quoted. ‘The women were not only misinformed, taking advantage of the fact they were illiterate or Quechua-speaking, but also had been coerced or threatened that they would not receive food or medicine if they refused.’

The article is the second time a SECL student has been featured in a national newspaper this week, with an English Language & Linguistics student publishing in The Independent on Tuesday.
