Laura Bailey to present in Northumbria

Dr Laura Bailey from the Department of English Language & Linguistics has been invited to deliver a talk, entitled ‘SVO and SOV Word Order Alternation in Latin’ at the Department of Linguistics and English Language, Northumbria University, Newcastle, on Monday 17 March.

Latin had a ‘neutral’ optional Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) word order, that is, an initial subject and the verb following its complement. However, SVO order later became the default in most of the descendants of the Latin language. Laura will present an analysis using the work of Cambridge linguist Theresa Biberauer et al, which accounts for the same SVO/SOV variation in Germanic varieties, including Middle English. She will assess the suitability of this analysis for the Latin word order.
