Quantitive methods for languages workshop

The Centre for Language and Linguistics Studies is now taking bookings for the first new workshop series to introduce participants to quantitative methods for analysing language, to be held on Tuesday 18 February.

The first workshop offers an introduction to a statistical software package, titled simply ‘R’, which was developed at Bell Laboratories.

The workshop will be convened by Dr Daniel Ezra Johnson (Lancaster University), and will consist of a morning (9:00-12:00) and afternoon session (13:00-16:00). In each session participants will be exposed to a mix of presentation of theoretical concepts in statistics, ‘hands-on’ exercises in R and exploration of research data sets provided by Graduate Teaching Assistant Jonathan Kasstan and Dr Eleni Kapogianni.

No prior working knowledge of R is required, but some understanding of probability will be necessary. To find out more about the R-project, please see the page here:

Everyone is welcome, but if you would like to attend, please contact Jonathan Kasstan (J.Kasstan@kent.ac.uk) with expression of interest no later than 13 February 2014, so that a room of the appropriate size can be booked. The workshop is provisionally booked for the Linguistics Lab, Rutherford W3.S7.
