Amalia Arvaniti to give seminar in Berlin

Professor Amalia Arvaniti, Head of English Language & Linguistics, will be presenting a practical linguistics seminar at the Zentrum für Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft [Centre for General Linguistics] in Berlin next week, on 10 February.

Professor Arvaniti’s seminar is a practical guide to the autosegmental-metrical (AM) understanding of prosody and its relation to ToBI (Tones and Break Indices) a system for the prosodic annotation of spoken corpora. She will be presenting the basic principles of the AM model of intonational phonology and the understanding that stems from this model regarding the form and function of prosody and the interaction of a language’s prosodic components. The application of these basic principles will be illustrated with examples from English as well as Greek and Romani, languages that for different reasons have presented challenges to AM theoretical concepts and the analytical procedures of AM which have largely been based on Laboratory Phonology staples, such as the reliance of good quality recordings of laboratory speech. This session will be followed by hands-on workshops with data from the audience.

The programme for the day is:

9.30-11.00: Prosodic analysis and ToBI: General principles

11.00-11.15: Coffee break

11.15-12.30: Applying the principles: examples of analysis from English, Greek, and Romani

12.30-14.00: Lunch

14.00-16.30: Language clinic (bring your own data)
